Kelley came to Yoga while looking for a way to balance her rigorous training as a competitive runner. Having tried other cross training routines, Kelley had only ever truly loved running. She was naturally drawn to the stillness of mind that comes from running steadily, sometimes for hours on end. She was initially drawn to yoga as a way to maintain flexibility and strength, but she soon found the dichotomy of stillness and rigor that she found in running also existed in the practice of yoga. She admitted to Zoe within her first months of practicing that she had finally found a cross training practice that she could stick with. Naturally, Zoe suggested that she deepen her practice and understanding by becoming a teacher.
Through teacher training Kelley was exposed to the many elements of yoga practice, including breathing techniques and yogic diet that also became compliments to her lifestyle as a runner. Kelley was fortunate enough, early in her yoga training, to be faced with an injury that forced her to temporarily stop running. As a result of this break in her normally demanding marathon training, Kelley was able to fully commit to her yoga practice for a number of months. We were astonished to see how quickly she progressed as a result of her one-pointed focus. Kelley was also very inspired by the lifestyle approach to living Yoga practice that she saw at ABY. A longtime vegetarian, Kelley now had new inspiration and dedication behind her choices. Kelley has completely committed herself to yoga practice, whether on her mat, or in her running shoes. She believes it was these changes that led her to win her first marathon in November 2009.
Kelley proved to be one our most engaged students in the teacher training program, continually asking questions and striving to absorb as much as possible. As a teacher, Kelley’s natural energy and enthusiasm for physical health and activity make her classes very fun and engaging. Kelley is a natural when it comes to communication, speaking or understanding 6 languages. Her gift for language allows her to present information clearly and concisely, allowing her classes to move swiftly without becoming overly challenging or confusing. We are happy to have such a gifted athlete as a part of our teaching team, and we will all be wishing her the best of luck in the Olympic trials!
